Delhi is the second largest metropolis in India, with a population of 17 million and a federally–administered union territory officially known as the National Capital Territory of Delhi (NCT). Located on the banks of the Yamuna River in northern India, it is one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world. The National Capital Territory of Delhi is spread over an area of 1,483 km²(573 sq mi).

Traditionally, most foriegn corporate residencies were located in some of the prime areas of Delhi, such as Vasant Vihar, Vasant Kunj, Greater Kailash and Defence Colony, but nowadays more and more corporates are being located in the peripheral satellitle cities of Delhi, such as Gurgaon, near to where many foriegn companies are locating their business operations. There is a prestigious Japanese International School in Vasant Kunj, south–west Delhi.

Gurgaon city, in Haryana state has a population of 200,000 and forms part of the national capital region of Delhi. After the liberalisation of the Indian economy in 1991, Gurgaon emerged as a solution to the residential and commercial property needs of people in Delhi. Growth was born primarily out of the ITES sector, but now, almost every type of commercial enterprise has a presence in Gurgaon, and the city has become reknowned as the skyscraper capital of India. Great improvement has been made over the years to the infrastructure linking Gurgaon to Delhi, and a new eight lane expressway now links the two cities. The Delhi Metro project, part funded by the Japanese government, will extend as far as Gurgaon by 2010.
